Gas Cooker Installation Cost and Who Can Connect It
Connecting a gas cooker is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the dedicated circuit or isolator switch some cookers need is an electrician's job. Here is what installation costs for a like-for-like swap, what you can do yourself before the engineer arrives, the steps the engineer works through, and how to check the engineer is registered and covered for cookers.

A cooker that runs on a different fuel from the old one is not a like-for-like swap. Changing the fuel type may need an electrician or a Gas Safe engineer, Checkatrade’s kitchen fitting cost guide says, and dual fuel and range cookers often need both trades, according to Checkatrade’s gas cooker guide.

Can you connect a gas cooker yourself?
No. Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, work on a gas appliance, including connecting, disconnecting or moving a gas cooker, must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, Checkatrade’s guide to connecting a gas cooker says. On a kitchen refit, that includes disconnecting the old cooker, not only connecting the new one.
The HSE sets out the legal duty: anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be a Gas Safe registered engineer and competent in that area of gas work. That covers anyone you hire to connect a gas cooker or a gas hob, a kitchen fitter included, since both are gas appliances.
Do not connect or disconnect a gas cooker yourself
Checkatrade says home insurance is likely to be invalidated if unqualified gas work contributed to a fire, leak or explosion.

A complete new circuit, for example a new circuit for a cooker, is notifiable electrical work, the Planning Portal says.

How a Gas Safe engineer installs a gas cooker
A Gas Safe engineer connecting a gas cooker works through these steps in order, Checkatrade’s gas cooker guide says.

- Isolate the gas supply
- Check the clearances, the ventilation and the surface
- Connect the bayonet fitting or hose
- Carry out a tightness test
- Test each burner and the oven
- Secure a freestanding cooker with any anti-tip chain or restraint the manufacturer requires
- Provide documentation that the work meets Building Regulations
Keep the documentation with the paperwork for your home. Unsafe or uncertificated gas work can cause problems when selling, Checkatrade’s gas cooker guide says.
How to check an engineer is Gas Safe registered
Registration alone is not the whole check. The duty the HSE sets out also requires the engineer to be competent in the area of gas work being done, and Gas Safe registered engineers carry ID cards that show which appliances they are qualified to work on, with the competencies on the back of the card.
Ask for the Gas Safe ID card and check the licence number on the Gas Safe Register website, Checkatrade advises, to see whether the engineer is covered for cooker installation. The HSE gives three ways to check an engineer:
- Use the Check an Engineer service on the Gas Safe Register website.
- Call the freephone helpline on 0800 408 5500.
- Text Gas and the engineer’s seven-digit licence number to 85080.
