Checkatrade’s new kitchen cost guide splits the price of a new kitchen into seven items, with a price for a small kitchen, a large kitchen and the average.

The prices include removing the old kitchen and installing the new one, plus flooring, plumbing, decorating and a few key appliances such as a built-in cooker, hob and hood, on Checkatrade’s figures. Three of the rows are the kitchen you buy rather than the work to fit it: the units, the worktops and the appliances.

The other £4,550 of the average pays for the installation, plumbing, electrics and flooring in Checkatrade’s breakdown.

Kitchen unit prices

Units cost £1,500 in a small kitchen and £10,000 in a large one in Checkatrade’s breakdown, and £3,000 on average. The same guide prices single base and wall units in standard and higher-quality versions.

Standard and higher-quality base units meet at £70 on Checkatrade’s figures, while a higher-quality wall unit starts £20 above the dearest standard one.

Worktop prices by material

Worktops cost £1,000 on average in Checkatrade’s breakdown, from £100 in a small kitchen to £5,000 in a large one. The same guide prices four worktop materials.

The ranges overlap, so a laminate worktop at the top of its range, £800, costs more than a granite one at the bottom of its range, £550, on Checkatrade’s figures. Quartz and granite sit £50 apart at both ends of their ranges in the same guide.

Kitchen appliance costs

A budget cooker, hob and hood costs around £450, and a premium cooker, hob, hood, fridge freezer, dishwasher and microwave closer to £5,200, on Checkatrade’s figures, which put appliances at £2,000 in an average new kitchen. The premium figure covers six appliances against the budget figure’s three, so a quote that says only “appliances included” could mean either.

Kitchen fitting cost

The installation row in Checkatrade’s new kitchen breakdown averages £3,000, from £2,200 for a small kitchen to £4,600 for a large one. The same guide’s text gives around £3,500 as the UK average paid for fitting, not including the cost of the kitchen itself.

Checkatrade’s kitchen fitting cost guide prices fitting an average-sized family kitchen at £2,000 to £6,000, with an average of £3,500. A kitchen fitter’s day rate is £250 to £350, or £37 an hour, on Checkatrade’s new kitchen figures. Some kitchen companies include installation in the price, and other times you find a fitter yourself.

A small, simple kitchen might take a few days to fit, and a medium to large kitchen one to two weeks, on Checkatrade’s figures.

Plastering, rewiring and removal costs

Besides a kitchen fitter, a new kitchen usually needs a plumber, an electrician, a Gas Safe registered engineer, a plasterer and a painter and decorator, Checkatrade’s cost guide says. A plumber charges £40 to £60 an hour or £325 to £375 a day, and a complete kitchen rewire costs around £1,000, twice the £500 average for electrics in Checkatrade’s breakdown.

Plastering has no row in that breakdown, and a small room costs around £1,100 to plaster and a large one £1,900, on Checkatrade’s figures.

To take the old kitchen away, a 6 to 8 yard skip costs £320 a week on average, and a man with a van £64 to £94 an hour, on Checkatrade’s figures.

Kitchen flooring cost by type

Flooring costs £750 on average in Checkatrade’s breakdown, from £500 in a small kitchen to £2,000 in a large one. The same guide prices each floor per m², with a day rate for fitting on top unless the m² price includes installation.

Polishing an existing concrete floor costs £50 per m² on Checkatrade’s figures, against £120 to £150 per m² for a new polished concrete floor supplied and installed.

High-end and bespoke kitchen costs

A high-end kitchen often costs £30,000 to £55,000 on Checkatrade’s new kitchen cost guide, above the £28,400 top of its breakdown.
